If you’re looking to escape the chilly weather back home in favour of warmer climes, there are numerous destinations to consider for a winter sun holiday.

While the temperatures drop to freezing or below in the UK, you could find yourself on a sunny beach somewhere far-flung if you know where to book a break that guarantees warm weather during the traditionally cold months.

Malta
One such location is Malta, where temperatures can reach 16 degrees C or more in December. The southern European country is ideal for a break that combines trips to the beach with sightseeing, as there’s plenty of culture to be found here.

Once you’ve relaxed on the sand, you can make your way around no less than nine UNESCO World Heritage sites – including its Megalithic Temples – as well as a number of forts and catacombs.

Tenerife
Another top spot for soaking up the sun in the winter is Tenerife – the largest of the Canary Islands. Book a stay in Santa Cruz and you’ll find temperatures reach up to 22 degrees C in December, which is warm enough for lying back on the sand at Playa de las Teresitas with a chilled cocktail in hand.

Morocco
You’ll find similarly warm temperatures if you choose to visit Morocco for your winter sun break. Marrakech is a great choice for absorbing some culture and it is here you’ll notice the warmly-coloured buildings and fragrant spices drifting across from the market stalls.

The capital city is home to landmarks such as the Bahia Palace and gardens and the Islamic college of Ben Youssef Madrasa, which was built in the 1500s, while you might enjoy an exhilarating quad bike ride through the desert.

Jordan
The kingdom of Jordan, which is bordered by Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq and Israel, also offers a pleasantly warm climate during the colder months back home. There are unique desert castles and religious sites to visit here, as well as the fascinating city of Petra, which is carved into a mountainside.

Journey to Aqaba, meanwhile, if you’d like to spend some time on the beach or try out a range of water sports on offer at the port.

Egypt
Not too far away is Egypt, and Sharm el Sheikh in particular is a popular destination for holidaymakers, with temperatures hitting between 15 and 35 degrees C even in the colder months.

There are numerous beaches to relax on, along with the chance to visit historical attractions like the Greek Orthodox Monastery of St Catherine – which dates back to the sixth century. Pick up souvenirs from the Bedouin handicraft stands or make your way up Mount Sinai – a renowned religious site.

South Africa
If you’re looking to experience a completely new culture far from home, take a look at breaks to South Africa. Safari fans will be in for a treat on winter getaways here, as there will be plenty of baby animals to see.

Expect temperatures of up to 25 degrees C during December as you make your way around Cape Town to admire Table Mountain, or simply bask on the beach and make the most of the sunshine while you can.

Tunisia
Africa’s northernmost country also offers mild weather in the winter, and if you book a break here you can take in some stunning architectural sights, from the Great Mosque of Kairouan – which was founded in the sixth century – to the Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul.

Explore historic sites such as Carthage, or have a poke around in the souks to sample some tasty local fare.

Malaysia
Malaysia, in south-east Asia, is a great choice for a warm getaway for those who also want to take in beautiful scenery. Beaches, mountains and forests comprise the landscape here, and fans of nature will be in their element at Taman Negara National Park.

The climate here is largely static throughout the year, ranging from around 21 to 32 degrees C, making the destination ideal for winter sun seekers.
